How to connect your existing contacts

Find out how you can import your existing contacts to Unless and display unique content to each one of them.

You can import your contacts such as leads and customers to Unless which will allow you to display unique content to each one of these individuals. This is also known as hyper personalization.

How does that work? Each imported contact gets assigned a unique identifier and a personalized link that you can then use in your email outreach. This personalized link helps identify each contact the moment they land on the page and display content that is unique to them.

When importing contacts, you can also add additional data points such as their industry, job title, subscription, product interest, loyalty card number and so on. These are called "custom traits" and can be used when segmenting your visitors into audiences and creating experiences for them.

Let's go over the steps to see how you can set this up.

Importing contacts

Importing contacts is a quick and simple process. First, you will need to unlock one of our integrations with your CRM or ESP of choice. When possible, we recommend you use an integration rather than the manual CSV upload, which will be explained below. This is because integrations allow for your contacts to be synced automatically and stay up-to-date. Data about these contacts can also be sent back to your tool of choice so long as their system allows this. The steps and terminology for each integration differ slightly however our interface will walk you through each step.

Alternatively, you can use a CSV file of the contacts you would like to import where the first row has data points (aka custom traits) such as first name, last name, job title etc. Once you have this file ready, you can go to the Contacts tab in your Unless Dashboard and click on "Import your first contact".

This will take you to the Import tab where you select the audience these contacts should become a part of when they visit your website via their personalized link. This audience could be something like Sales leaders in the finance industry in Europe, or Premium customers of product line ABC.

Once you attach the CSV file, you will see a pop-up with the columns listed. On this screen you can "match" columns with descriptive names. You will then be able to use these names for custom audiences as well as dynamic content insertions on your pages. Once you have given names to the columns, you can click "import contacts".

Once your contacts are imported, you can use the "auto-clean" functionality to remove clutter such as Inc, Ltd, https etc. so that your personalizations look cleaner. You can also click on any field to make adjustments or updates to it.

Contacts Details

To the left of each contact, you will see an icon with three dots and three options will appear when you click on it as can be seen in the screenshot below. These options are pretty self-explanatory but there is an important distinction we need to make.

When you want to preview the experience of a specific contact it is very important that you use the Preview option and not the personalized link of that contact. Using the link will lead to you getting identified as that contact and will mess up your data. Using the preview option on the other hand will allow you to check that everything is set-up and working as you would like it to be before sending out a campaign.

Exporting contacts

It is also possible to export contacts out of Unless by selecting the audience you would like. The resulting CSV file will be updated with any changes you made or enrichments we added (for example through firmographic integrations).

In the CSV file, you will notice an additional column with unique identifiers for each contact. You can add this identifier to any URL going to your website in your email or LinkedIn outreach. For example: https://unless.com/?unlc={{identifier}}. This way when a contact clicks on the unique link you've sent them, they will be identified when they land on the page.
